What is the difference between a Social, Workshop, and Laboratory?
Here are the differences between the events we host:
Socials are informal gatherings that where we get together with typewriters and and supplies for writing letters.
Virtual Socials last 24 hours and are worldwide through the power of the internet. Connect and share on Twitter and Instragram with the hashtag #LWASocial.
Workshops are focused on teaching you how to do something along a theme. Workshops are held both in person and online.
L.W.A. Laboratory is where we invite you to experiment with us while exploring a specialized aspect of letter writing. Perks are small-groups, individual attention from Kathy & Donovan, focused themes, and take-home treats so you continue tinkering at home.

Private parties & hiring L.W.A. for your event
Kathy and Donovan can create a workshop or letter social for your private event. Contact us for private workshop themes, our availibility, and pricing via email

About Us & Our Mission

The Letter Writers Alliance is a member based organization dedicated to keeping the art of letter writing alive. The Alliance was started in the Summer of 2007 by Kathy Zadrozny and Donovan Beeson. With a combination of both online presence and in person gatherings we strive to give people the tools to maintain the art of letter writing. Donovan and Kathy design, create, package, email, web design, and all the other things that go along with running a worldwide organization. There are no interns or minions; these two ladies do it all. The L.W.A. community is what keeps them going and they thank you for being awesome.

With over 7,000 members worldwide, the member site is the biggest part of the Alliance. We offer free printable downloads, exclusive member products, and vintage postal items. The L.W.A. has been included in the letter writing book, Good Mail Day and has been interviewed by the BBC regarding the importance of paper correspondence. At then end of the day, we are happy to see so many people enthusiastic about letter writing.

"We give you the tools to get offline & write more letters."
(Listen to BBC interview of Kathy discussing letter writing.)

Answers to your Burning Questions

Who makes the L.W.A.?
Since 2007 the Letter Writers Alliance has been dedicated to the art of letter writing. Our creative members help this endeavor. These are the letter lovers who make our community a success. Below is an infographic for our 2013 stats. We update our infographic in the Spring, so look out for 2014's infographic then.

What does my membership include?
Your membership gets you a fancy member card, a embroidered patch, an introduction letter, and access to the member's only website which gets you so much more. Once you login to the member's area, you are privy to free downloads of stationery and cards that you can print at home, as well as an optional pen pal swap so you have more people to write to. There are also member exclusive items, such as our popular Royal Society of Venturesome Parcels serial mailing program. We also offer members items such as member seals, vintage postal items, and other letter writing goods that you cannot find anywhere else.

How long does membership last? Is there an annual fee to stay a member?
Your membership is LIFETIME. Letter Writers Alliance membership is just a one-time entrance payment and that is all. Once you are in, you are in!

What name goes on my member card?
The member card comes blank except for your member number. This way you can write whatever fake name or silly title you wish or give the membership as a gift.

Do you accept members outside of the U.S.?
Absolutely! Our community is worldwide and we use virtual letter socials, live video, and online classes to unite us all in real time.

What happens if I lose my card?
We do not keep a record of your member number or your address in order to maintain your privacy. You can get a replacement card for $1, but if you don't remember your member number, we will reassign you a new number. There is no need to re-order a full membership kit if you lose your member card. You don't stop being a member if you lose your card; the membership is lifetime.

Pro-tip: Take a picture of your member card with your phone and you will aL.W.A.ys have a file of it.

But why don't you have a huge L.W.A. member register?
We don't want access to that kind of information. Your privacy is extremely important to us and we never want to be responsible for your information getting away from us. We also want you to be in control of your personal information and how much you participate in the Alliance, which is why all of our optional activities are on an opt-in basis.

I don't want any pen pals, I just want to be a member. Can I do that?
No problem! The pen pal swap is optional, not mandatory. It is something you need to sign-up for in order to get matched. If you change your mind later down the road, you can sign-up any time you wish, even if it is years after you first became a member.

Don't you see the irony of having a letter writing group online?
It is quite an interesting twist - we use technology to enable an analog activity. The website is a meeting point and resource to enable more letter writing. The L.W.A. was created in order to unite letter writers; we use the member site as our "club house," if you will. The free downloads and pen pal swap are resources to get members offline and writing more letters.

So are you anti-technology/email?
Absolutely not. We aren't anti-email, we are just pro real mail. We use technology to connect letter writers as well as to find letter writing inspiration. We love the stuff we can create on our computers and the quick connections we can make with email. We also know that letters are an important part of human communication and are a great way to maintain connections between friends and strangers.

Do you accept donations?
Yes we do. Our Letter Writing Socials are free events and we aL.W.A.ys supply free stationery and envelopes. Your donation will help us continue doing this and spread the letter writing love.
